Our 2017 and 2018 gun seasons are booked. The only openings we have remaining in 2018 are during the first week of November rut, hunting October 29 through November 3. Note: Two of the biggest bucks on Coal Camp were taken during the first week of rut by bow hunters. Please contact Paul at 515-238-6164 for details.
Coal Camp Outfitters averages 20 to 25 hunters per year, and typically will have 3 or 4 hunters in camp each week. A group of 4 hunters who book with us will have the cabin and week to themselves. We offer 6-day hunts during bow season, and 5-day hunts during Shotgun 1, Shotgun 2 and Late Muzzleloader seasons. All hunts are $4,000 (plus sales tax) per person, and include on-site lodging and all meals.
We offer 3 weeks of bow hunting during November rut. Bow hunts begin at the end of October and continue until Thanksgiving. Our bow hunts are 6-day in duration. Bow hunts are typically done from tree stands in the heavy timber and adjacent to foodplots. Tree stands include both hang-on and ladder stands. Tower stands and blinds are also an option. All hunters must wear a safety harness while in a tree stand.
We typically will have four gun groups during the season. All gun hunts are 5-day in duration. Iowa's Shotgun 1 season begins on the first Saturday of December and goes for 5 days. The Shotgun 2 season begins on the second Saturday of December and runs for 9 days. Late Muzzleloader season begins immediately after Shotgun 2 season and goes until January 10. Most gun hunts are done from heated box blinds. If hunting from a tree stand, a safety harness is required.
All hunt packages include lodging in our on-site cabin and home cooked meals. We provide fully guided hunts, transporting you to and from our tree stands or blinds on a daily basis. Each day the hunt location is mutually agreed upon based upon wind, weather, previous hunting pressure and deer activity. Communication is maintained throughout the day to adapt the daily hunting plan. We help field dress your animal and have a walk-in cooler available for use to preserve the deer until processing. Meat processing and taxidermy services are nearby that we can recommend.
All hunts are $4,000 (plus sales tax) per person. A $1,000 non-refundable deposit is due with registration form. Balance is due September 1 of the hunt year. Personal checks or money orders are accepted. For nonresident hunters who apply for a tag in Zone 5, and are unsuccessful in drawing a tag, your deposit may be applied to a future hunt with Coal Camp (subject to availability). The application period for Iowa non-resident tags is during the month of May each year.
